第9题

Watercolor is the oldest painting medium known. It dates back to the early cave dwellers 'who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water.
Fresco, one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing pigments and water and applying these to wet plaster. Of the thousands of people who stand under Michelangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few are aware that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world.
The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century led to a decline in fresco painting, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly as a medium for doing preliminary sketches or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters reinstated watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a notorious love for the outdoors and also great fondness for small, intimate pictures. The subdued tones of watercolor had a remarkably strong appeal for them.
The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until in the twentieth century the United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well - known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.
What is the main theme of the passage?
A.The decline of fresco painting.
B.The predominance of oils over watercolor.
C.The rediscovery of watercolor in England.
D.The origin and development of watercolor.

In many stories on TV and in science-fiction books, men travel to faraway stars. They have quick, easy journeys. But so far, men have been able to reach only the earth’s own moon.

Suppose a man wanted to reach a distant star. Even if he traveled his whole life, he would have to move faster than the speed of the light. Nothing can move that fast except light itself.

Strange things happen to an object when it moves rapidly. The object weighs more. An object moving at 86 percent of the speed of light is twice as heavy as it is at rest. A stick appears shorter. A clock runs more slowly. A man would not age so fast as he would on the earth.

Light travels more than 186,000 miles a second, or about 11 million miles a minute. In one year, light travels six trillion miles. That great distance is called a light-year. It is used to measure distance in space.

The star closest to our sun is Alpha Centauri. It is more than four light-years away. If one traveled at the speed of light, he could make a round trip to Alpha Centauri in nine years. But, even at that speed, he could not reach Alcaid (北斗星) in the handle of the Big Dipper. A one-way journey to Alcaid would take almost 200 years

1.In this passage the words “closest to our sun” means the star().

A、the earth we live on

B、Alpha Centauri

C、the Big Dipper

D、the moon

2.A one-way journey to Alcaid would take().

A、about nine years

B、less than four years

C、almost 200 years

D、less than 100 years

3.Why do we measure the distance in light-years instead of miles?()

A、Units of light-years sound better.

B、Using light- years reduced the number of figures used.

C、We used to measure distance in light-years long ago.

D、We do not make mistakes when we use light-years.

4.If a stone moved at the speed of light, it().

A、would weigh twice more than it is motionless

B、would weigh as much as it is on earth

C、would weigh less than it is on earth

D、would not have weight at all

5.This story is mainly about ().

A、the distance between the sun and the other stars

B、the problems of traveling to faraway stars

C、what happens when we travel faster than the speed of light

D、the tool we use when we go to faraway stars

Learning English for 2008 Beijing Olympics
Yang Zhenhua has been a taxi driver for years. He knows every corner of the city. His work usually wins him thanks except when he meets foreigners, for Yang doesn't know any English.
"Now I study English in my free time," said Yang in his 40s. He pulls an English textbook from the toolbox. "I study English to help with Beijing Olympics," he said proudly. Yang is just one of the millions of common people in Beijing who started to learn English when Beijing became the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games. Learning and speaking is hot among the people of this 3,000-year-old city. From schools to factories, men and women, old and young are studying their "ABC". Books teaching useful expressions for everyday communication(交际) are the most popular.
Some people, such as taxi drivers, bus conductors and the policemen, are asked to learn basic English. Nearly 3,000 students from 50 universities in Beijing went to the streets last August as volunteers to teach English to the people of this city. They taught common and useful sentences, such as greetings and asking and answering simple questions. Official figures show that about 15% of Beijing citizens can speak English. It is said that it will rise to 70% or 80% during the following years. Besides, the government encourages the use of English in many places. The city underground railways give messages by radio in both English and Chinese. English, not Chinese, is used as the most important working language for the Olympic Committee(委员会). Nearly all the committee members can speak English freely. Many are good at the language.
