Three men traveling on a train began a conversation about the world’s greatest wonders.

“In my opinion,” the first man said, “the Egyptian pyramids(埃及金字塔)are the world’s greatest wonder. Although they were built thousands of years ago, they are still standing. And remember: the people who built them had only simple tools. They did not have the kind of machinery that builders and engineers have today.”

“I agree that the pyramids in Egypt are wonderful,” the second man said, “but I do not think they are the greatest wonder. I believe computers are more wonderful than the pyramids. They have taken people to the moon and brought them back safely. In seconds, they carry out mathematical calculations that would take a person a hundred years to do.”

He turned to the third man and asked, “What do you think is the greatest wonder in the world?”

The third man thought for a long time, and then he said, “Well, I agree that the pyramids are wonderful, and I agree that computers are wonderful, too. However, in my opinion, the most wonderful thing in the world is this thermos.”

And he took a thermos out of his bag and held it up.

The other two men were very surprised. “A thermos?” they exclaimed. “But that’s a simple thing.”

“Oh, no, it’s not,” the third man said. “In the winter you put in a hot drink and it stays hot. In the summer you put in a cold drink and it stays cold. How does the thermos know whether it’s winter or summer?”

1. The underlined word “thermos” in Chinese means “_______”.

A. 电冰箱

B. 洗衣机

C. 电风扇

D. 保温瓶

2. That the three men could not agree on what the world’s greatest wonder was because _______.

D. the journey ended too soon

3. The first man thought the pyramids were the most wonderful things in the world because ____.

People are often killed while crossing the road. Most of them are old people and children. Old people are often killed because they usually can't see or hear very well. Children are often killed because they are careless.
A car, truck or bus can't stop very quickly. If a car is going very fast, it will travel many meters before it stops. People don't understand this. They think a car can stop within a few meters. The faster a car is traveling, the longer it needs to stop. It is very hard for a person to know how fast a car is traveling.
The only safe way to cross the road is to look both ways, right and left. When the road is clear, it's safe to cross. The correct way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It's not safe to run. If people run across the roads, they may fall to the ground.

The family members live together for many reasons. They may help to bring up children or to take care of an ill relative. They may also help with saving money. Sometimes children are brought up by their grandparents, for their parents have died or can never take care of them. 第4题

In many stories on TV and in science-fiction books, men travel to faraway stars. They have quick, easy journeys. But so far, men have been able to reach only the earth’s own moon.

Suppose a man wanted to reach a distant star. Even if he traveled his whole life, he would have to move faster than the speed of the light. Nothing can move that fast except light itself.

Strange things happen to an object when it moves rapidly. The object weighs more. An object moving at 86 percent of the speed of light is twice as heavy as it is at rest. A stick appears shorter. A clock runs more slowly. A man would not age so fast as he would on the earth.

Light travels more than 186,000 miles a second, or about 11 million miles a minute. In one year, light travels six trillion miles. That great distance is called a light-year. It is used to measure distance in space.

The star closest to our sun is Alpha Centauri. It is more than four light-years away. If one traveled at the speed of light, he could make a round trip to Alpha Centauri in nine years. But, even at that speed, he could not reach Alcaid (北斗星) in the handle of the Big Dipper. A one-way journey to Alcaid would take almost 200 years

1.In this passage the words “closest to our sun” means the star().

A、the earth we live on

D、the moon

2.A one-way journey to Alcaid would take().

B、less than four years

C、almost 200 years

D、less than 100 years

3.Why do we measure the distance in light-years instead of miles?()

A、Units of light-years sound better.

B、Using light- years reduced the number of figures used.

C、We used to measure distance in light-years long ago.

D、We do not make mistakes when we use light-years.

4.If a stone moved at the speed of light, it().

A、would weigh twice more than it is motionless

B、would weigh as much as it is on earth

C、would weigh less than it is on earth

D、would not have weight at all

5.This story is mainly about ().

A、the distance between the sun and the other stars

B、the problems of traveling to faraway stars

C、what happens when we travel faster than the speed of light

D、the tool we use when we go to faraway stars
