听力原文:M: Hello, professor Johnson.
W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today?
M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn't coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me when I participate in.
W: What sport did you choose?
M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing.
W: What are you going to say about skiing?
M: That's the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country.
W: So why is that a problem?
M: I'd like to start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods. I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn't as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy, but that's not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out. But now I don't know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It's not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds roll by. That's different.
W: Then you'll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That's common, right?
M: Yeah, I guess so.
Questions:
19. What is the topic of the man's writing assignment?
20. What problem does the man have while working on his paper?
21. What does the woman say is common in writing papers?
(20)
A.Beautiful scenery in the countryside.
B.Dangers of cross-country skiing.
C.Pain and pleasure in sports.
D.A sport he participates in.

Your Bean Steak (素肉排), Sir!What sort of food are we likely to be eating in the year
Your Bean Steak (素肉排), Sir!
What sort of food are we likely to be eating in the year 2000?
Most people, when you ask them a question like that, either say: " There won't be any left, " or "Whatever it is, there won't be much taste in it." Of course, there are good reasons for being worried about the world's food supplies in the future.Nevertheless, not all the experts share these worries.
For one thing, although the world's population is rising fast, food production is keeping pace with it, even in developing countries. It is therefore argued that the main reason why people are hungry is not that there is a world food shortage but that methods of cultivation are not sufficiently advanced in some areas and the food is not fairly distributed (分配 ).
This does not mean, however, that our diet (饮食 ) will go on being the same.In many industrialized countries, people feed animals with grain to produce high-quality beef, even though the grain would feed the human population, and use fishmeal to fatten pigs to improve the quality of bacon. While not many of us would like fishmeal for lunch, its nutritional value is high and the unattractive fish it is made from can be presented to the public in colorful packets of fish fingers.
By the year 2000, many of these problems will have been solved.Scientists are already capable of making steaks from soy beans. It is quite obvious that there will still be enough to eat, if we are not too particular about where the food comes from and what it is made of.
1.Most people believe that food supplies in the future().
A、will become a very serious problem
B、will be the same as they are today
C、will be enough in quantity but not good in quality
D、will be much better than they are today
2.The reason why people are hungry in today's world is().
A、poor farming methods and bad distribution
B、slow growth of food production
C、food shortages all across the world
D、fast rising population
3.The word "bacon" in Line 5, Para.3 most probably is().
A、a kind of "meat" made from grain
B、meat made from fish
C、food for fish
D、meat made from pigs
4.The word "particular" in Line 4, Para.4 means().
A、special
B、choosy
C、detailed
D、very exact
5.The title of this passage suggests that().
A、food in the future will be tasteless
B、there will be worldwide food shortages
C、diet in the future will be very different
D、science is making rapid progress

"The ancient Hawaiians were astronomers," wrote Queen Liliuokalani, Hawaii&39;s last reigning monarch, in 1897. Star watchers were among the most esteemed members of Hawaiian society. Sadly, all is not well with astronomy in Hawaii today. Protests have erupted over construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope(TMT), a giant observatory that promises to revolutionize humanity&39;s view of the cosmos.
At issue is the TMT&39;s planned location on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano worshiped by some Hawaiians as the piko , that connects the Hawaiian Islands to the heavens. But Mauna Kea is also home to some of the world&39;s most powerful telescopes. Rested in the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea&39;s peak rises above the bulk of our planet&39;s dense atmosphere, where conditions allow telescopes to obtain images of unsurpassed clarity.
Opposition to telescopes on Mauna Kea is nothing new. A small but vocal group of Hawaiians and environments have long viewed their presence as disrespect for sacred land and a painful reminder of the occupation of what was once a sovereign nation.
Some blame for the current controversy belongs to astronomers. In their eagerness to build bigger telescopes, they forgot that science is the only way of understanding the world. They did not always prioritize the protection of Mauna Kea&39;s fragile ecosystems or its holiness to the island&39;s inhabitants. Hawaiian culture is not a relic of the past; it is a living culture undergoing a renaissance today.
Yet science has a cultural history, too, with roots going back to the dawn of civilization. The same curiosity to find what lies beyond the horizon that first brought early Polynesians to Hawaii&39;s shores inspires astronomers today to explore the heavens. Calls to disassemble all telescopes on Mauna Kea or to ban future development there ignore the reality that astronomy and Hawaiian culture both seek to answer big questions about who we are, where we come from and where we are going. Perhaps that is why we explore the starry skies, as if answering a primal calling to know ourselves and our true ancestral homes.
The astronomy community is making compromises to change its use of Mauna Kea. The TMT site was chosen to minimize the telescope&39;s visibility around the island and to avoid archaeological and environmental impact. To limit the number of telescopes on Mauna Kea, old ones will be removed at the end of their lifetimes and their sites returned to a natural state. There is no reason why everyone cannot be welcomed on Mauna Kea to embrace their cultural heritage and to study the stars.
Queen Liliuokalani&39;s remark in Paragraph 1 indicates
A.its conservative view on the historical role of astronomy.
B.the importance of astronomy in ancient Hawaiian society.
C.the regrettable decline of astronomy in ancient times.
D.her appreciation of star watchers feats in her time.
Mauna Kea is deemed as an ideal astronomical site due to
A.its geographical features
B.its protective surroundings.
C.its religious implications.
D.its existing infrastructure.
The construction of the TMT is opposed by some locals partly because
A.it may risk ruining their intellectual life.
B.it reminds them of a humiliating history.
C.their culture will lose a chance of revival.
D.they fear losing control of Mauna Kea.
It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that progress in today"s astronomy
A.is fulfilling the dreams of ancient Hawaiians.
B.helps spread Hawaiian culture across the world.
C.may uncover the origin of Hawaiian culture.
D.will eventually soften Hawaiian hostility.
The author"s attitude toward choosing Mauna Kea as the TMT site is one of
A.severe criticism
B.passive acceptance
C.slight hesitancy
D.full approval.

The job was done, and it was time for a last cigarette. Eddie began tapping the pockets of his overalls, looking for the new packet of Marlboro he bought that morning. It was not there.
It was as he swung around to look in his toolbox for the cigarettes that Eddie saw the lump. Right in the middle of the brand new bright red carpet, there was a lump. A lump the size of a packet of cigarettes.
"I've done it again? said Eddie angrily. "I've left the cigarettes under the carpet?
He had done this once before, and taking up and refitting the carpet had taken him two hours. Eddie was determined that he was not going to spend another two hours in this house. He decided to get rid of the lump another way. It would mean wasting a good packet of cigarettes, nearly full, but anything was better than taking up the whole carpet and fitting it again .He turned to his toolbox for a large hammer.
Eddie didn't want to damage the carpet itself, so he took a block of wood and placed it on top of the lump. Then he began to beat the block of wood as hard as he could. He kept beating, hoping Mrs. Vanbrugh wouldn't hear the noise and come to see what he was doing. It would be difficult to explain why he was hammering the middle of her beautiful new carpet... The lump was beginning to flatten out.
After three or four minutes, the job was finally finished. Eddie picked up his tools, and began to walk out to his car. Mrs. Vanbrugh accompanied him. She seemed a little worried about something.
"Young man, while you were working today, you didn't by any chance see any sign of Armand, did you? Armand is my bird. I let him out of his cage, you see, this morning, and he's disappeared. He likes to walk around the house, and he usually just comes back to his cage after an hour or so and gets right in. Only today he didn't come back. He's never done such a thing before, it's most peculiar..."
"No, madam, I haven't seen him anywhere," said Eddie, as he reached to start the car.
And he saw his packet of Marlboro cigarettes on the panel, where he had left it at lunchtime....
And he remembered the lump in the carpet...
What did Eddie want to do when he had finished fitting the carpet?
A.To have a cigarette.
B.To hammer the carpet flat.
C.To put back his tools.
D.To start work in the dining room.

Passage Two In spring, chickens start laying again, bringing a welcome source of protein
Passage Two
In spring, chickens start laying again, bringing a welcome source of protein at winter’s end. So it’s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honoring the egg.
Some traditions are simple, like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter breads.Others elevate the egg into a fancy art, like the heavily jewel-covered “eggs” that were favored by the Russians starting in the 19th century.
One ancient form. of egg art comes to us from Ukraine. For centuries, Ukrainians have been drawing complicated patterns on eggs. Contemporary artists have followed this tradition to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious, and delicate. Eggs are, too.
“There’s something about their delicate nature that appeals to me,” says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast. Several years ago, she became interested in eggs and learned the traditional Ukrainian technique to draw her very modem characters. “I’ve broken eggs at every stage of the process—from the very beginning to the very, very end.”
But there’s an appeal in that vulnerability. “There’s part of this sickening horror of knowing you’re walking on the edge with this, that I kind of like, knowing that it could all fall apart at any second.” Chast’s designs, such as a worried man alone in a tiny rowboat, reflect that delicateness.
Traditional Ukrainian decorated eggs also spoke to those fears. The elaborate patterns were believed to offer protection against evil.
“There’s an ancient legend that as long as these eggs are made, evil will not prevail in the world,” says Joan Brander, a Canadian egg-painter who has been painting eggs for over 60 years, having learned the art from her Ukrainian relatives.
The tradition, dating back to 300 B.C., was later incorporated into the Christian church. The old symbols, however, still endure. A decorated egg with a bird on it, given to a young married couple, is a wish for children. A decorated egg thrown into the field would be a wish for a good harvest.
Why do people in many cultures prize the egg?
A.It is a welcome sign of the coming of spring
B.It is their major source of protein in winter
C.It can easily be made into a work of art
D.It can bring wealth and honor to them
Why have contemporary artists continued the egg art tradition?A.Eggs serve as an enduring symbol of new life
B.Eggs have an oval shape appealing to artists
C.Eggs reflect the anxieties of people today
D.Eggs provide a unique surface to paint on
What do we learn about the decorated “eggs” in Russia?A.They are shaped like jewel cases
B.They are cherished by the rich
C.They are heavily painted in red
D.They are favored as a form of art
Why does Chast enjoy the process of decorating eggs?A.She never knows if the egg will break before the design is completed
B.She can add multiple details to the design to communicate her idea
C.She always derives great pleasure from designing something new
D.She is never sure what the final design will look like until the end
What do we learn from the passage about egg-painting?A.It originated in the eastern part of Europe
B.It has a history of over two thousand years
C.It is the most time-honored form of fancy art
D.It is especially favored as a church decoration

Jessie lived in the country, but one year she decided to visit the capital city to do some shopping and to see the sights. She stayed at a hotel near the central market. She had seldom been to the city before, and was very excited about what she would find. On the first morning of her visit, as she walked from the hotel to the market, she passed a beggar.
