Two years ago, my husband bought me a bike. If you live in a town, it is often faster than a car and you don't have to worry about parking. You leave it anywhere. As it has a seat at the back and a basket at the front, I can take my little daughter to school, to the library, to the shops, to anywhere.
I use it most in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter when it is cold and the rain is heavy.
You must, of course, be careful on a bicycle. Accidents are not the only problem, though. One day I went shopping and came back to find my front wheel missing. It was a long walk to the bicycle shop. Now I have three strong locks.
My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for short journeys. He says it is better than waiting for a bus. He still uses his car for longer journeys, but I think that all day's sitting down is making him fat and lazy. On my bicycle I get a lot of exercises and fresh air, and this makes me feel a lot younger.

The statement that "Love is blind" is all too true. People in love need to depend on others to help them separate their idealization of who they think their lover is from the reality of who their counterpart(对方) really is. That is one reason why I don't advise Internet dating since it is very difficult to get realistic impressions of supposed Internet counterparts.
Sadly, students have told me that as soon as people finally reach the point of marriage, "true love dies". I disagree. It is not the end of true love, but the beginning of realistic love. I have been married for 21 years in a cross-cultural marriage. Despite the difficulties of such marriage, I love my wife now more than ever before. But that does not mean my emotions are always the same as when I first fell in love. As a matter of fact, love is more than emotion; it's both a decision and a commitment(承诺,奉献).
True love must include making a self sacrificial(自我牺牲的) commitment to always work for another person's good. I like to think that falling in love is like a match lighting a candle. It can start a love relationship. But it doesn't "hold a candle" to the true lifelong realistic commitment that makes true love last for life. Unlike a candle, true love will not grow tired and eventually bum out, but will grow ever deeper throughout a lifetime.
People in love usually can't ______ their idealization of their lover from the reality.
A.separate
B.connect
C.depend on
D.think

We say that a person has good manners if he or she behaves politely and is kind and helpful to others.Everyone likes a person with good manners but no one likes a person with bad manners. "Y es", you may say , " but what are good manners? How do I know what to do and what not to do?"
People all over the world agree that being well-mannered really means being kind and helping others, especially to those older or weaker than ourselves. If you remember this, you will not go very far wrong.
Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.
He never laughs at people when they are in trouble.Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind, never cruel, either to people or to animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a post office, he takes his turn.He does not push to the front of the queue. In the bus, he gives his seat to an old person or a lady who is standing. If he accidentally bumps into someone, or gets in their way, he says, "excuse me" or "I'm sorry".
He says "please" when making a request, and "thank you" when he receives something. He stands up when speaking to a lady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated. He does not interrupt other people when they are talking. He does not talk too much himself. He does not talk loudly or laugh loudly in public. When eating, he does not speak with his mouth full of food. He uses a handkerchief when he sneezes or coughs.
(1)、Which of the following is considered as being well-mannered?
A:Laughing at the weaker
B:Behaving impolitely
C:Helping older people
D:Being kind to ourselves
(2)、If you try to be kind and helpful to others, you ______.
A:will make a mistake
B:will be completely wrong
C:will be considered very polite
D:will not be regarded as being well-mannered
(3)、When waiting for a bus, a well-mannered person should ______.
A:try to stand in the front of the line
B:line up in a queue
C:give his seat to a lady
D:stand where he is and wait for his turn
(4)、According to this passage, a polite person ______.
A:will not break into other's conversation
B:will do most of the talking when speaking with others

Dear Sirs,
I am writing to your office to attempt to determine why I have encouraged so many obstacles to receiving my proper monthly social allotment.【1】The trouble occurred ten months ago and has actually gotten worse, making extremely difficult for me to meet normal financial obligations.【2】The first problem which I had to deal was simply getting a monthly check from you, without having to wait for four or five extra weeks for it. Then two of the checks that have arrived【3】made out for the wrong amount, giving me fifty dollars fewer than I should have received.【4】Another check was mailed to me at an address, which I moved more than two years ago.【5】My letter of inquiry, which I sent to the Los Angeles Office of the Social Security administration, never brought the answer, and when I finally telephoned them I was able to talk with an arrogant clerk【6】from the tone of his voice I could tell that he didn't want to be bothered with me. The final blow is a letter received from your office yesterady in which you state that【7】my allotment is being discontinued, your records indicated that I am legally dead.
Apart from this letter of protest I have at least one other recourse:【8】filing suit against the Social Security Administration, that I would prefer not to have to do.【9】Howevers I am asking you to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that【10】from now on I receive my social security benefits with further obstacles. Remembering My GrandparentsWhen memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty --
Remembering My Grandparents
When memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty -- a great tall man with thick hair becoming gray.He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped on his nose. The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the prodnct of a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had never dulled his humour nor his love of a joke.
Everywhere he went,“Gramp” made friends easily. At the end of half an hour you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give orders , but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like suggestions.
One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said : “Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that.” Then he drove away with his horses. The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the horses to get their drink.
“How many bags of potatoes were there?” Gramp inquired. “I don't know. ”“How many potatoes did you pick up?”“I didn't pick any. ” “Not any! Why not?”“You said I could pick, them up if I wanted to. You didn't say I had to. ”In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget: when Gramp said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to. Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own day.
She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave her pleasure. The bird, the flowers, the clouds-all that was beautiful around her- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who used to gather grass and show it to his son , saying , “See how beautif ul this is ! ”
In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents, manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle. Such were the two people with whom I spent the months from June to September in the wonderful days of summer and youth.

第10题

1+Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between a writer and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours at a typewriter. “You have got to want to write,” I said to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found for me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for many years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who died wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to test (even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure). This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
21、The passage is meant to _______ .
A.warn young people of the hardship that a successful writer has to experience
B.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer
C.show young people it is unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth
D.encourage young people to pursue a writing career
24、In “…people who died wondering”, “who” refers to those _______ .
A.who think too much of the dark side of life
B.who regret giving up their career halfway
C.who think a lot without making a decision
D.who are full of imagination even upon death
25、“Shadow-land” in the last sentence refers to _______ .
A.the wonderland one often dreams about
B.the bright future that one is looking forward to
C.the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached
D.a world that exists only in one’s imagination
